Public Outreach Coordinator (POC) – Job Description

 

Goals

Public Information - Spreading the word of Al-Anon/Alateen by distributing posters, literature, books, meeting lists, and people volunteering to speak at functions.

Cooperating with the Professional Community - has been one of the activities for Public Information to communicate with professionals in medicine, religion, law, education, governments, courts, prisons, mental hospitals, psychologists/psychotherapists.

Institutions - has been one of the activities for Public Information to communicate with professionals and residents in hospitals, treatment centers, mental health agencies, shelters, correctional facilities, and other residential facilities

PI/CPC/Institutions Coordinator receives information from WSO's Public Outreach Committee and passes this information on to Vermont's 7 districts.

 

Workshops

In the course of one year, there are three known workshops that literature is made available to and members can volunteer to attend.

 

VT Freemasons CARE Training:

CARE = Comprehensive Assessment and Recovery Effort
Co-Sponsored by: VT Dept. of Health, VT Dept. of Education, VT Freemasons

When: Wednesday in March and December
Where: Holiday Inn in Rutland
Time: 6:00PM dinner (free), 7:00PM meeting
Volunteers: 1/2 to speak on Al-Anon for 5 minutes
Material: Meeting lists, Al-Anon and lots of Alateen literature
Attendees: Educational Professionals, Administrators, Guidance Counselors from high schools throughout the State
Display literature on a resource table (table is provided).

BEST Workshop

BEST = Building Effective Supports for Teaching Children with Behavioral Challenges

When: Mid June
Where: TBA
Time: In the morning - 90 minutes
Volunteers: As many as possible: 3 is good
Material: Meeting lists, Al-Anon and lots of Alateen literature
Attendees: Educational Professionals, Administrators, Guidance Counselors from high schools throughout the State. (The 90-minute session is attended by the # of people who sign up; in 1999, there were 6 professionals with 3 Al-Anon members.
Display literature on a resource table.

Governor's Youth Conference

When: November (usually 3rd or 4th Monday of month)
Where: Sheraton Hotel in Burlington
Time: All Day Event
Volunteers: 1 or 2 to drop off and pick up literature (District 4 works great)
Material: Meeting lists, Al-Anon, and lots of Alateen literature
Attendees: Educational Professionals, Administrators, Guidance Counselors, STUDENTS from elementary, middle and high schools throughout the State.
Display Al-Anon and Alateen literature. Put out literature by 7:30 am and remove at 4:00 pm. A person is not required to stay all day unless they choose to attend the conference at no charge. There is a charge for lunch.

The POC is a voting member of the Area World Service Committee and should attend all meetings as well as Spring and Fall Assembly. If the POC cannot attend a meeting, the POC should send a written report to the Area Chair.

Expenses such as postage, phone calls and actual gas cost may be submitted to the Area treasurer for reimbursement monthly.
